… that only 25% of all children in Haiti get to start primary school and of that number, 2% make it through high school? The kids we are sponsoring are certainly tampering with statistics – we consistently have a higher pass rate than the national average.

… there are many communal wells in Haiti.  Most have not been tested for contamination.  Originally intended to be free, there are always enterprising folks with money who put a lock on communal wells and charge usually 5  gourdes for a gallon of water which is usually not fit for drinking or cooking.

… that there is no garbage collection in Cap-Haitien.  We dispose of our trash by burning it.

… that the average daily wage is $2, and 80 percent of the roughly 8 million people live below the poverty line.

… that Haiti is still a source for the makers of expensive French liqueurs that are flavoured with the dried peel from Haiti’s oranges.  The women who sit in the market all day peeling fruit, then dry peels on roof tops are paid the equivalent to a penny per POUND.  It takes a lot of fruit peel to make one pound. The peels are also used in perfumes.
