School System in Haiti
The schools are a mix of state owned and private schools. The lycees are state run and teachers are paid (sometimes) by the state. We have students attending Lycee Charlemagne Perault in Sen Rafayel, Lycee Philippe Guerrier and Lycee Boukman in Cap-Haitien. They are NOT free, but less expensive than the private schools. It is difficult to get in and difficult to stay in a lycee. Academic requirements are stringent and the rules are carved in stone. We have young people in both settings.
The ministry of education sets up the curriculum and final exams for Grade 9 and Secondaire 4.
There are 7 years of high school:
Year 1, 2, and 3 are called 7, 8, 9 and are “Année Fondamental”.
Year 4 is called Secondaire 1. Year 5 is called Secondaire 2.
Year 6 is Secondaire 3 and year 7 Secondaire 4. Two years ago, this “nouvo Secondaire” system became the norm and any student who had attended high school during the old system of Philo and Rheto will never be able to complete high school as the programs are not transferable nor compatible.
School typically starts in September but delays are frequent due to hurricane season, political unrest, and diseases (such as Covid-19). Schools do not operate over the hottest summer months.
Secondary School Fees - payable in US$ only
We pay for our students out of all the donations we receive, but we need your continuous support to keep them in school, provide food and potable water, pay dental and medical care as well as prescription glasses.
The cost to sponsor one student for a year is approximately US$1,500 (or $125 US a month). This includes school fees, school supplies, uniforms (including shoes, socks, underwear), transportation if necessary, tutoring, drop-in centre and hygiene products.
To foster academic success, we also use financial donations to help students with housing, food, medical and dental services, when and as needed.
We are looking for sponsors for our secondary school students.
To direct your funds to an individual sponsorship at the high school level, please complete and submit the form found on the Contact Us page. You may want to help someone complete high school or perhaps you are thinking long term and would prefer to follow someone through secondary and on to post-secondary.
We look forward to hearing from you.
